Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority are urging motorists to slow down this bank holiday weekend to save lives.

They're appealing to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to use the roads responsibly.

156 people lost their lives on Irish roads last year.

Paula Hilman, Assistant Garda Commissioner, is urging people not to drink and drive:

"If they have been out the night before, just make sure to account for how long the alcohol to leave the system."

"Leave yourself enough time the next day so that you're driving safely."

Speed Is A Factor

AC Hilman also added a stat about speed and high speed roads.

"7 out of 10 fatal crashes happen on 80km/h and 100km/h roads."

"So we know on any road, but especially where there's higher risk - look out for one another and watch your speed."
