An overhaul of the Irish driving test has been announced by the Road Safety Authority.

Speaking to the Irish Times, chair of the organisation Liz O'Donnell says it is part of a plan to make roads safer.

This year has been devastating for Irish roads with 165 deaths recorded so far.

In 2021, a 10 year strategy for road safety was published. It made suggested changes, hoping to halve the number of road deaths by 2030. This includes better education for learner drivers.

Liz highlighted the face that the rules of the driving test haven't changed in over a decade. While the way we drive most certainly has!

Potential Changes

The new driving test was introduced in 2011, and was considered more difficult than any before.

It's likely the new driving test will reflect the rise in e-scooters and how motorway driving is a bigger factor across the country.

It's not clear what the new test will look like, but fingers crossed they reconsider the reverse around a corner!
