STI research

Every day there are more than one million new cases of curable sexually transmitted infections around the world.

This latest research from the World Health Organisation comes as it warns there has not been a substantive decline in recent years.

On average one in 25 people around the world have an STI or multiple infections at the same time.

The World Health Organisation says this needs to be a "wake-up call" over the "lack of progress in stopping the spread of STIs".

The WHO says:

"STIs are preventable through safe sexual practices, including correct and consistent condom use and sexual health education."

"Timely and affordable testing and treatment are crucial for reducing the burden of STIs globally."
