Shooting stars

As many as 10 shooting stars per minute could be visible in Irish sky's tonight and tomorrow night.

It's when the popular Perseid Meteor Shower is expected to be at its peak.

Astronomy Ireland is calling on the public to help count during the Perseid Meteor Shower by filling out a form on its website.

No professional equipment is needed - just the naked eye and a dark part of the sky, away from street lights.

The Perseids will bring with it 20-times more shooting stars than a normal night.

They are considered the best meteor shower of the year, with very fast and bright meteors.

Perseids frequently leave long 'wakes' of light and colour behind them as they streak through Earth's atmosphere.

They are also known for their fireballs.
