Former Republic of Ireland footballer Kevin Doyle has been forced to retire from the game.

The striker, who starred in the Premier League for Reading and Wolves, is citing medical advice after he started to suffer headaches after heading the ball.

He made the announcement on Twitter overnight:

The 34-year-old had been playing for Colorado Rapids in the MLS in recent years.

Doyle started his professional career with St Patrick's Athletic, before a successful spell with Cork City earned him a move cross-channel to Reading in 2005.

He fired in 18 league goals in his first season with the Royals after being handed his chance to shine following injuries to Dave Kitson and Leroy Lita.

He then had a mixed spell with Wolves, before making the move stateside.
