The Education Minister mentioned broadening the CAO points structure at a conference today.

Students could get CAO points for things like work experience, teamwork and communication skills.

The Education Minister says it could be part of a proposed senior cycle reform.

The likes of project work and other practicals could contribute to final grades feeding into CAO points.

The Irish Times reported that Minister Norma Foley addressed the issue at a conference in Killarney.

She said policymakers are keen to ensure a wider range of skillsets is 'measured in a variety of different ways.'.

The proposed move has been welcomed by the Irish Second Level Students Union.

Deputy President Adam Lambe says there's a need to recognise soft skills.

"We have been calling for this model of continuous assessment for a while," he said.

"We have seen during the pandemic the need for continuous assessment."

"Transition Year shouldn't be an academic or exam year."

"It should remain a year for experiencing and widening your pallet."
