The price of a pint of Guinness will go up in February.

They will increase by 12 cent excluding VAT from the first of the month.

In a statement Diageo said it could no longer absorb the cost of inflation and the increase will effect all its draught beer brands.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is encouraging struggling pubs to apply for Government supports:

"We've been surprised, as a Government, is that not that many businesses have actually applied so far," he said.

Major Blow To Pubs

Meanwhile, the Vintner's Federation says this increase couldn't have come at a worse time.

CEO Paul Clancy explains:

"This news from Diageo is a further blow to the trade."

The VFI is calling on Diageo to re-consider because of the pressure on the pub trade.

Mr. Clancy also noted January and February are among the quietest months for pubs every year.
