New fines to stop lockdown breaches

People could face fines of up to €2,500 and sentenced to 6 months in prison for having a house party under proposed laws to enforce COVID-19 restrictions.

They will see Gardai given the power to issue fines to those found breaching health rules.

On-the-spot €500 sanctions could be issued if people don't wear masks on public transport or in shops.

It will also apply to people to travel outside the 5km limit.

For house parties, a graduated system of sanctions will apply, starting with €1,000 for the first offence.

The maximum is €2,500 euro and/or up to six months in prison for repeat offenders.

The new bill was approved following a meeting of Cabinet late last night and will now go before the Oireachtas for approval this week.

It's not expected to take effect by the time Level 5 restrictions come into force.
