New Vatican Athletics Team Has Sights Set On The Olympics

Vatican Athletics Team.

Nuns and priests could one day take part in the Olympics thanks to a new Vatican athletics team.

62 members form the new team.

These members include people from the clergy and Swiss Guards.

Olympic hopes.

'Athletica Vaticana' hope to one day compete in the Olympics.

Monsignor Melchor José Sánchez de Toca y Alameda, president of Vatican Athletics, spoke at the team's launch.

He said the Olympic Games were “the dream but not in the short term”.

“The dream," he continued, "is that we have often had is to see the Holy See flag among the delegations at the opening of the Olympic Games.”

Italian Olympic chief Giovanni Malago welcomed the formation of the new team.

However, he joked that they shouldn't 'get too big' and deprive Italy of a medal.

2020 Olympic Games.

The next Olympic Games takes place in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.

The event will mark the games return to the city for the first time since 1964.

These Games will see the introduction of a numbr of new Olympic sports including freestyle BMX and 3x3 basketball.

Their first outing is on January 20th.

They will compete in the 10km Corsa di Miguel in Rome.
