People from County Clare say it would be "devastating" if another airline was to pull out of Shannon Airport.

Aer Lingus may be considering moving some of its operations to the UK.

Delta and United Airlines have already said they will not be flying their transatlantic routes from the airport next year.

These locals in Shannon say the knock-on effects will be huge:

"Everything is about Dublin, it's true from Jackie Healy Rae - I dont give a... about anything below the Red Cow"

Another person agreed, she said, "I think it'd be disastrous because it's dreadful at the moment."

While there are fears for jobs there too, as a man pointed out, "It'd be devestating for the area and the surrounding areas."

"Shannon a big employment area, so there'd be a lot of people out of work I assume. You don't want to see that."

Shannon Airport 'Must Be Protected' By Government

Meanwhile business owners in the West are calling on the Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan to protect regional airports.

Aer Lingus has declined to comment on this issue so far.

However, Delta and United Airlines have both said they will not be operating from there next year.

CEO of Limerick Chamber of Commerce, Dee Ryan, says the region depends on the airport:

"We need more flights and more routes into regional airports.

"I'm not talking about sunshine routes, I'm not talking about flights to Lanzarote where Irish people going out to spend money in other countries."

So she added, "I'm talking about strategic links to European and international trans-Atlantic hubs."

"Routes that will open us up to new markets, from there we can grow our regional economy and create more jobs."
