France Placed On Highest Security Alert After Terrorist Attack

France's security alert has been raised to the highest level after a suspected terrorist attack.

A woman was decapitated and two others were stabbed to death in Nice, shortly after 9am.

Several others were injured while a man was arrested after he was shot and wounded by police.

Shortly afterwards, a man was shot dead by police in the city of Avignon for threatening passers by with a gun.

The French President, Emmanuel Macron says his country is under attack.

After visiting the scene of the crime Mr Macron said "If  we have been attacked again, it is because of our values."

"Let me say this again, we will never give in."

Simon Coveney Stands With French Goverment

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney says Ireland stands with France in the face of violence and terrorism.

In a tweet he wrote, "Once again we stand with France and French people in the face of violence & terrorism."

Nice's Mayor Christian Estrosi says there is no doubt that this morning's attack is terror related:

"Nice becoming once more  a victim of extremist Islamism".

Mr Estrosi said the man continued to say "Allahu Akbar" as he received medical treatment.

"There is no doubt of his intentions," he concluded.
