It's a first for an Irish music festival.

The HSE's drug monitoring programme is to be a feature of next month's Electric Picnic Festival.

Drugs can be surrendered by the public through an anonymous 'surrender bin' at the event.

While the HSE will also analyse substances of concern identified by medics.

Director of Electric Picnic, Melvin Benn, says people will be notified if dangerous batches are in circulation.

"Nobody will get any drugs that are put into a surrender bin back."

"These are drugs that have been discarded in normal circumstances they may be destroyed."

"We're going in to analyse these drugs if there's a harmful component within them."
