One More Death And 35 New Cases Due To Covid-19

35 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed to the National Public Health Emergency Team today.

While one more person has died with the disease, meaning the death toll stands at 1,772.

The majority of today's cases, 24 in total, have been linked to known outbreaks or are close contacts of another confirmed case.

Five cases have been identified as community transmission.

71% of those reported today are in people under the age of 45.

Carlow is the county with the highest number of cases today with 6.

It's followed by Clare which has reported five.

The remaining 24 cases are spread across ten counties.

While Kildare, Laois and Offaly remain under local lockdown until August 20th due to a large volume of cases in those counties in recent weeks.

Hundreds of those have been linked with four meat plants that are located in the midlands.

The acting Chief Medical Officer has warned that the number of confirmed cases is likely to rise and fall in the coming days.

Dr Ronan Glynn says it will be next week before the effectiveness of those measures in the midlands can be measured.
