Greg Tarr has been named the overall winner of the 57th BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

The 17-year-old from Bandon Grammar School in Cork scored the top prize for his project titled "Detecting state-of-the-art deepfakes."

Greg used artificial intelligence to quickly and accurately identify "deepfake" videos.

The project, which uses over 150,000 lines of codes is faster and more efficient than current models on the market.

Deepfakes are images and videos which have been convincingly altered to replace one person's likeness with another's.

Deepfakes of Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezoz went viral on Tik Tok last year.

The Leaving Cert Student has taken part in the competition five times but this year takes home the cash prize of €7,500 euro and the BT Young Scientist trophy.

This year’s competition was hosted online due to COVID-19 restrictions.
