New fees for AIB customers

AIB customers will soon be charged for contactless payments.

Bank customers will also have to pay a quarterly maintenance fee for their current accounts.

From May 30th it will now cost AIB customers 1 cent per tap.

It's following Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank for the convenience of cashless payments.

AIB is also getting rid of its free maintenance for consumers who keep a balance of €2,500 in their accounts - charging €4.50 per quarter.

The move could cost people an extra €80 a year.

The average customer makes 5 ATM withdrawals, 5 chip and pin, 10 direct debits and 30 contactless transactions per month.

The first time people will see this being charged to their account will be September 28th.

A spokesperson explains: "The European interest rate environment has made it difficult for the bank to provide maintenance and transaction fee-free banking.

"We want to ensure that AIB can continue to invest in a market-leading current account proposition and provide a high standard of banking services to all our current account customers.

"We continue to provide banking free of maintenance and transactions fees for student, graduate, advantage and basic bank accounts.

"Customers who have a mortgage with us and pay their mortgage direct debit from an AIB current account will also be exempt from these changes."

Bonkers.ie says there are alternatives to traditional banks with digital-only services such as N26 and Revolut becoming increasingly popular.
