A major restoration project led by artist Yvonne McGuinness and her husband, Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy, has been given the green light by Kerry County Council.
The couple purchased the historic Phoenix Cinema in Daingean Uí Chúis (Dingle) in November 2024, after the much-loved venue closed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally serving audiences in west Kerry since the early 20th century, the cinema had been put up for sale in 2022, sparking local concern that it could be converted into a purely commercial or residential development.

The newly approved plans will preserve the building’s core function as a cinema while significantly expanding its creative offering. The redevelopment includes a multi-disciplinary performance space, exhibition and rehearsal areas, a redesigned courtyard, and residential studios for visiting artists. A café, bar and restaurant are also part of the proposal.
While many submissions welcomed the plans — particularly from members of the wider west Kerry arts community — some neighbouring residents raised concerns regarding parking and the potential impact on adjoining properties.
