People didn't take this revelation lightly, with many defending the King of Pop on Twitter:
Sam Smith is over. What self respecting musician says they don’t like Michael Jackson? Honey..

Yes Sam Smith can have his opinion, of course. But you can’t just say “I don’t like Michael Jackson”, you have to say “I’m very sorry but Michael Jackson’s songs aren’t my fave.” That’s it. Pay some respect to the ultimate LEGEND and forever #1 of billions. pic.twitter.com/jLsyBx8uva

Some people have been defending the 'Too Good at Goodbyes' singer, saying he has a right to have an opinion:
People acting like not liking Michael Jackson is a career ending thing need to get a grip. Jesus Christ.
People are allowed opinions and just because Sam Smith has different taste isn’t really newsworthy pic.twitter.com/I2ggdqFeaG

My opinion on Michael Jackson:
He was a very good entertainer. But his singing skills weren't that great.
Michael's fans aren't going to come after me too, are they?
Sam Smith has a right to his opinion. Let it be!— IRequestAri (@request_ariana) August 12, 2018
Sam Smith has yet to comment on the debacle.
