Pop diva Mariah Carey has spoken out about her 17-year-long battle with bipolar disorder, admitting that she feared she'd be 'exposed' by someone else.

The legendary pop star has been dealing with the mental health condition in secret since she was diagnosed in 2001 when she suffered a mental and physical breakdown.

She told People magazine: "Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me.

"It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn't do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love - writing songs and making music."

Mariah shared the front cover of People magazine on Instagram with the caption: "I'm grateful to be sharing this part of my journey with you."
