Before you jet off to some idyllic, Instagrammably gorgeous destination, sure to make your friends green with FOMO, it's important to take some time to get your skin summer ready; not only will you feel your best at all times on holiday, your skin will glow and if you're rocking a false or a real tan, it will go the distance. Here at Spin Style, we're chronicling the five unmissable steps to get your skin sorted before your inevitably smug airport check in. We're only a little bit jealous, can you tell?
- A month to go - Time to address skin imperfections, blemishes, and spots
We tend to panic when a spot appears by dealing with its aftermath, when really, we should be taking preventative measures, ensuring those pesky blemishes don't make an appearance in the first place. But as our skin is one of the slowest organs in the body to respond, it's important to give yourself a bit of lead in time if you want gorgeously clear skin by the time you head for the beach. For this, we cannot speak highly enough of Neutrogena® Visibly Clear® range, among which a wash, scrub, an oil-free moisturiser and gentle facial wipes are included.
- Two weeks to go - Exfoliation
The last thing you want to take on holiday with you is lacklustre, dry, and dead skin cells. Nope. Get to work with a gentle but effective exfoliant in the shower, two to three times per week in the run up to your travels. Your skin will not only feel super soft and silky, but it will hold onto a tan (real or false) for much, much longer. It will also prevent your skin from drying and hardening. Just make sure you're using something that's not too harsh, and if it's one tailored for your body, don't use the same one on your facial skin; it'll be too rough.
- Two days to go - Hair removal
Though it's rarely a treatment we look forward to, a pre-holiday hair removal session is always essential; it makes you look and feel cleaner, less sweaty in the heat and it saves you the effort of having to shave whilst you're on vacation, which means more time for lounging by the pool. If you go all the way with a bikini wax make sure to book in somewhere that uses only the best hot wax brands.
- One day to go - Tanning
Let's face it; most of us hate the thoughts of those first few days on holiday spent as white as a ghost. Thankfully, the wonderful world of fake tan means we can now fake it in such a way that we don't look like Oompa Loompas. On the day you tan, don't use any products on your skin and - rookie mistake - never moisturise pre-tanning; do that they day before and moisturise afterwards. Another tip - if you shave your legs before tanning, the product will sink into the pores and leave you with a speckled effect; not ideal. Use a good tanning mitt to ensure an even application.
- All of the time - Nutrition
You are what you eat is an old adage but it holds true for all the right reasons. We're only as gorgeous as what we put into our bodies, no matter how much money you invest in fancy treatments and products. Though a healthy balanced diet should be a year-round commitment, there's nothing like an impending holiday to give you an added surge of motivation. Start upping your water intake and make sure you're hitting those 8 glasses per day. If like us, you struggle to guzzle it, some fresh cucumber, mint leaves and lime will almost make it feel like you're already on holiday. Better still, start your mornings with hot water and a squeeze of fresh lemon; this has countless benefits for your skin. Foodwise, nobody's skin likes sugar so let this baddie take a backseat and nourish yourself with skin-loving foods such as Omega-rich fish (salmon is always a good one) and walnuts, oatmeal, olive oil, avocados, walnuts, kale, kiwis - the list goes on. Be sure to load up on foods rich in Vit C and Vit E, and don't forget the power of carrots - packed with carotenoids - for giving you an enviable glow.
Time to get moving!
