Whether you're looking for a special makeup look for December 25th or you want to strike out and be adventurous for your next Christmas party, there's no easier way to do this than with a striking red lip. It's festive, it's sexy and it's such a statement. You could wear a plain black dress with straight flat hair and once you pair it with a strong red lip, you've got instant Hollywood appeal.

For the perfect red pout, you first want to check your complexion. Do you prefer reds that have more of an orange base or reds that have more of a colder blue base? One will be very warming, the other, a lot cooler. So first decide on the look you're going for.

Then you want to make sure your lips are well prepared. Red lipstick can be heavy going on your kisser. Make sure to exfoliate away and dry or rough bits. Using your toothbrush for this after you've brushed your teeth is a really handy way of getting it done.

Make sure they're well hydrated in general, with a really good lip balm. I prefer Kiehls to Vaseline as sometimes Vaseline can just sit on top of your lips and act as a barrier without actually getting down into them and doing the job.

Then, your best bet, is to opt for a subtle ombre effect. So by that we mean a darker lip pencil and a lighter lipstick. Not too drastic but a slight difference that you can blend together. This gives your lips more definition and it will make them look huge.

Make sure you apply your pencil in gentle feathery strokes, it's easier this way than to draw one constant line because this is just too easy to mess up. Bit by bit works better.

Finish off with a tiny speck of gloss right in the middle to add even more dimension to your look. Pair this with lashings of black mascara - falsies if you wish - but keep the colour focus on your lips alone. Next step, find some mistletoe and someone's face to destroy.
