Manchester Utd are into the quarter finals of the Champions League after hammering AC Milan 4-0 last night.
Down 3-2 from the first leg at the San Siro, Milan needed 2 goals without reply in order to progress.
But that never looked likely, with Wayne Rooney’s double making it 30 for the season for him.
He opened the scoring on 13 minutes with yet another header, this time from a pinpoint Gary Neville cross in from the right.
United never hit top gear, but in truth never needed to against a Milan side that looked as over the hill as many pundits had suggested.
Rooney made it 2 early in the second half, latching onto a sublime Nani pass from the left flank, before poking it under the advancing Abbiati.
That was game set and match and further goals from Ji Sung Park and Darren Fletcher completed the hammering.
The only other moment of note was the rapturous reception former United favourite David Beckham received when he appeared as a second half sub for the Serie A visitors.
It was the 34 year old’s first appearance at Old Trafford since he was jettisoned from the Red Devils to Real Madrid in 2003.
Manchester United progressed to the quarters, 7-2 on aggregate.
That was Milan’s worst ever aggregate defeat in Europe, while also marking the first time that United had gotten the better of them over two legs in the European Cup/Champions League.
Lyon will be joining United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich in the last 8, after they ended Real Madrid’s dream of appearing in the final in their own stadium next May.
The French side led 1-0 from the first leg, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s 6th minute goal at the Santiago Bernabeu levelled the tie.
But Lyon were a different team in the second half and Miralem Pjanic struck on 75 minutes to send them through 2-1 on aggregate.
That was the sixth year in a row that Real Madrid have failed to get beyond the last 16 in the Champions League.
But Real Madrid are out at the 2nd Round stage
for the 6th year in succession, after defeat to Lyon
Cristiano Ronaldo’s ealry strike at the Bernabeu
gave the Spanish side the lead, but Pjanic
levelled proceedings to end the game at 1-1,
putting the French side through 2-1 over the 2 legs
