It's claimed young Irish people are choosing to buy homes based on lifestyle, rather than the price of a property.

A leading housing expert believes changing behaviours suggest half of Irish people will rent for decades.

Former Housing Agency chairman Conor Skehen says policy-makers are too focused on housing completions to increase supply, he says the next generation isn't looking to be in their 'forever home' by the time they're 40:

"Ireland is rapidly converging with the home-ownership patterns with all the rest of Europe our home ownership pattern peaked over 25 years ago and its been falling ever since. That's the first myth the second is the myth is generational fixity. Baby boomers will move at least twice more in their lifetime and they'll behave very very differently so what was true in the past is no longer true."
