There's been calls for learner drivers to be allowed drive on the motorway.

It comes after the UK recently decided they should be allowed gain experience on motorways before they get their drivers licence.

Drivers with L-plates are still not allowed to do it here, however.

But the Head of Training at the Irish School of Motoring, Seamus Cullen, believes that rule should be changed:

"The average speed on your driving test is 22 kilometers an hour.

"So you go from only driving at very low speeds to hopefully passing your test and then being let loose on the motorway, where you're driving at 120 kilometers an hour.

"Personally I think it's better to train people to drive at those higher speeds properly."
