Best of luck @vanessa_cruez for Miss Asia 2017 tonight! Vanessa Cruez, Miss Asia Malaysia 2017. @vanessa_cruez Name of National Costume: “The Sarawak Kenyalang” Description of National Costume: Being known as the Land of the Hornbills, Sarawak State of Malaysia, is a home to eight out of 54 species of hornbills in the world. Hornbill habitats are protected by the establishment of national parks, nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries. Piasau Nature Reserve, Gunong Mulu National Park, Tanjung Datu National Park and Batang Ai National Park are among places where hornbills are frequently spotted in Sarawak. “Kenyalang,”which means hornbill - is both an important bird and cultural symbol for the people of Sarawak especially the Dayak communities. The Rhinoceros hornbill, the best known of all the species, represents the State’s emblem. For the Dayaks, hornbills signify the spirit of God and they must be treated with respect. If a hornbill is seen flying over or visiting their residences, it is said that good luck and fortune will bestow the community. Hornbill elements are also incorporated into their arts, dances, carvings and ceremonial dresses. This costume is heavily inspired by the rich cultural and traditional elements found in East Malaysia/Malaysia Borneo namely Sarawak State of Malaysia. The imposed of cultural elements such as the kain pua kumbu and the hornbill sculpture act as a perfect combination of ingenious design and comfort. The colors and styles also depict the type of life of each Malaysia Borneo ethnic community has evolved into. Photographed by Adib Sc Photography, Seksyen 7, Shah Alam.
