It’s Silver for John Joe Nevin at the Olympics

He’s been beaten by Britain’s Luke Campbell 14 to 11 at the Excel arena, in the bantamweight final of the boxing.

There had been high hopes that he’d take another gold for Ireland, after Katie Taylor’s phenomenal success earlier in the week, but it wasn’t to be.

In the closely fought contest, Campbell and Nevin took one round apiece, before Campbell won the third round by a clear margin of 5 / 3.

President Michael D Higgins has offered his ‘sincere‘ congratulations to the fighter, calling his achievement outstanding.

The President said John Joe had touched all of us this week with his positive attitude, remarkable skill and great courage in the ring.
